Disabled Veteran Exemption by State

Every state that ships a disabled veteran property tax exemption on this site is listed below, cited to statute. Most fall into one of three shapes: a flat exemption once a veteran crosses a minimum VA disability rating, a full exemption reserved for a 100% rating, or a benefit that scales in tiers as the rating rises. Fourteen states fully exempt the primary residence of a 100%-rated disabled veteran outright; six run a tiered schedule instead, where the exemption amount increases at each disability-rating bracket (see each state's own program page for the exact tiers); the rest apply a flat dollar or percentage reduction once a minimum rating is met. Because eligibility, amount, and application deadlines vary this much state to state, the table below exists to let you compare them side by side rather than read fifty separate state pages — click through to any state's program page for the full eligibility rules, worked savings example, and official application form.

"Mechanism" describes how the exemption reduces your bill; "Scope" (All taxes, School only, County only, or Varies) is on each state's own program page. Figures are cited to statute and dated — see each program page for the source.

See the methodology for how figures are verified and estimates computed.

Informational only — not legal or tax advice. Exemption rules and amounts are summarized from official statutes and state tax-agency sources as of each program's verified date and can change by legislative session. Dollar figures are estimates derived from Census ACS county tax data, not actual bills. Confirm your eligibility and current amounts with your county assessor before relying on anything here.
