$250 Real Property Tax Deduction for Senior Citizens, Disabled Persons, or Surviving Spouses
Who qualifies
- Age
- 65 or older
- Income limit
- $10,000Annual income may not exceed $10,000 for the year, excluding (with restrictions) monies received from Social Security, or, in some cases, Federal, State, county, or municipal government pension, disability, and retirement programs.
- Ownership
- Must own and occupy the dwelling as a permanent resident as of October 1 of the pretax year. An unmarried surviving spouse age 55 or older of a deceased qualified claimant may also qualify.
- Residency
- Legal resident of New Jersey; must have been a legal NJ resident for the one year immediately prior to October 1 of the pretax year. Qualifies by being age 65 or older, OR permanently and totally disabled.

How to apply
- Application required: Yes
- Deadline: File the initial claim (Form PTD) with the municipal tax assessor or collector. The annual post-tax-year income statement (Form PD5) is due on or before March 1.
- Renewal: annual — Form PD5 (Annual Post-Tax Year Income Statement) must be filed with the tax collector each year on or before March 1 to confirm continued income eligibility.
Combining with other exemptions
May be received in addition to the $250 Veterans' Deduction on the same property if the claimant separately qualifies.
