Highest Property Tax Counties in the U.S.
The 100 counties below have the highest effective property tax rates of any county in a state this site has verified, derived the same way every rate on this site is derived: median real estate taxes paid divided by median home value, from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey. High effective rates usually come from a combination of high local government spending, heavy reliance on the property tax rather than income or sales tax, and — in some cases — comparatively low home values relative to the tax levied, which mechanically inflates the rate. Counties whose ACS data sits at the federal top-code ceiling are excluded here, since their true rate is a floor rather than a precise figure and would distort a ranked list.
